Ash from the volcano, Iceland on Tuesday shut down traffic on the main airports in Spain, the Canary Islands off the coast of Africa, air traffic control authorities said.
“Currently, all airports in the Canary Islands, with the exception of Las Palmas, closed some airports in Morocco”, said Eurocontrol, the agency, which manages European air travel.
“According to forecasts, in the afternoon, the area of higher concentration of ash can move in a northeasterly direction crossing the Iberian Peninsula and in south-eastern France.
Eurocontrol said there were 29,155 flights in the European Region on Monday, not far from the normal level of traffic.
Volcanic ash could pose a serious threat to the aircraft, reducing visibility, damage flight control and eventually cause jet engines to fail.
The problems began in mid-April, when the volcano under a glacier in southern Iceland Eyjafjallajokull started and sent a cloud of ash into the atmosphere, covering most of the airspace of Europe for six days.
